About us
Founded in 2014, The Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA) is the peak body that represents the Australian shooting industry. Since our inception, SIFA has worked in advocacy, research, education and safety promotion to inform the public, regulators and politicians about the vital role our industry plays in Australia. At the core, SIFA’s main role is to promote, develop and represent the interests of a vital Australian industry that adds significant value to the Australian economy. In 2019 alone, it was estimated that the gross contribution of the Australian shooting industry to GDP was $2.4 billion and supported some 19,500 full time jobs. We are a true partner to all industry stakeholders including the government and various regulatory bodies. We look for sensible outcomes and opportunities so the entire Australian shooting industry can continue to prosper and develop as a crucial part of Australia’s trade and business landscape. SIFA takes its role as an industry peak body extremely seriously. We understand the need for sensible industry regulation whilst upholding public safety. We function to ensure that law abiding Australian firearms businesses can start-up, grow and operate with minimal regulatory interference whilst ensuring that law makers focus on developing real solutions to keep firearms out of the wrong hands.

Yesterday SIFA hosted the inaugural NSW Parliamentary Friends of shooting (PFoS) ‘try shooting’ day at the Sydney International Shooting Centre. NSW state politicians, advisors and parliamentary staff were invited to have a go at pistol and rifle shooting in a competition setting. The smiles on the day said it all! SIFA would like to thank: Roy Butler MP and Phil Donato MP for convening the parliamentary friendship group and their on going go support of the shooting industry. Brian Kirkman and his amazing team at SISC who went out of their way to make this event a huge success. Olympians Dan Repacholi MP, and Suzy Balogh for being onsite to support the day. Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Sydney Branch Inc for their ongoing support of SIFA and the shooting Industry. SIFA’s members Beretta Australia, NIOA, TSA Outdoors and WINCHESTER AUSTRALIA LIMITED for sending staff to engage with attendees about the awesome Australian shooting industry ❤️❤️ We can’t wait to host the next event!

Since the start of this entire West Australian firearms debacle, The Nationals WA have remained in strong support and defence of our Australian industry and law abiding firearms owners. As a major party, the WA Nationals have a real chance to make a difference! The Australian shooting industry is extremely thankful to the WA Nationals for their unwavering and ongoing support.
The Nationals WA are to be commended on representing the 90,000 licensed firearm owners in WA by opposing Labor’s flawed firearms legislation introduced into Western Australian State Parliament. Labor’s proposals are inconsistent with the National Firearms Agreement between all Australian States and Territories. A major frustration for many in the Australian shooting industry has been witnessing NSW Police categorise certain firearms differently to their jurisdictional counterparts. SIFA has been representing these issues to NSW Police, whilst seeking to understand the categorisation processes undertaken, so that we could provide clarity back to industry stakeholders. In what comes as a huge step forward, we are extremely pleased to see that after listening to our concerns (and the concerns of many others), NSW Police have announced the formation of a Firearms Classification Working Party (FCWP). Thank you to Merome Beard for crossing the floor and voting with the The Nationals WA to oppose Paul Papalia’s attack on law abiding people.
Liberal MLA Merome Beard is to be commended for representing her constituents in opposing WA Labor’s deeply flawed firearms legislation. She has taken the time to properly understand what is being proposed and its impact on 90,000 mainstream Western Australians. Her measured and rational approach to firearms regulation is consistent with the National Firearms Agreement. Australian jurisdictions should aspire to uniform firearms laws - no State or Territory should go it alone. Legislation should be based on evidence and not rushed through Parliament. WA Opposition Leader Shane Love and the The Nationals WA are to be commended on their measured and rational opposition to the proposed firearms regulations currently being rushed through the WA Parliament. Australian jurisdictions should aspire to uniform firearms laws - no State or Territory should go it alone. This approach is consistent with the National Firearms Agreement. Legislation should be based on evidence and not rushed through Parliament - Legislative Committee scrutiny is necessary. The Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA) chief James Walsh, said the buy back scheme was a “pointless and unnecessary waste of taxpayer funds” which would be going towards “low risk, legally owned and registered firearms”. Mr Walsh said SIFA questioned what part of the firearms reform package was directed at criminals, and criminal possession of firearms. “This is irrefutable evidence that the WA Labor government is not interested in targeting criminals and criminal possession of illegal firearms, rather they are going after the law-abiding sporting shooters in an effort to trick the public into thinking they are doing something to combat the out-ofcontrol crime problem in WA,” Mr Walsh said.
