Industry Freight Solution
The big news this month is that Australia Post / StarTrack have developed a freight solution for the Australian shooting industry. Whilst there are a few kinks to straighten out, they have committed to working with SIFA to get a complete workable solution for the entire shooting industry.

For more information on the service and to sign up for an account, a dedicated email address has been set up. Please email firearmsenquiries@auspost.com.au. Australia Post / StarTrack have also provided us with a summary of the solution which can be downloaded here.

Queensland Firearms Amnesty.
As we have previously reported, the Queensland Police Minister ignored SIFA’s recommendations and implemented a firearms amnesty that ignored previously successful models and exploits the licensed dealer network.

Following further campaigning, we can report that Legislation is now before the Parliament to fix the issues. As part of this process, SIFA was invited to give evidence before the Queensland government's Legal Affairs and Safety Committee where we were able to formally highlight this failure in policy.

Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956
Continuing an 18-month process, SIFA remains engaged with the Department of Home Affairs and the Hon. Jason Wood, Assistant Minister for Customs, as this regulation is being updated. We have had further input on the category of ‘self-ejecting, manual loading, repeating action shotguns’ and other parts of this regulation. We believe that the end is in sight, and will continue to monitor the progress.

Victorian Annual Politicians Clay Target Shoot Postponed
Unfortunately for the second time, this event has been postponed due to COVID. It is now scheduled to be held on Thursday 9th December at Melbourne Gun Club. This event is in its 18th year and SIFA is proud to co-sponsor this initiative which is a great opportunity to introduce policymakers to the shooting sports.

Introducing SIFA’s Policy and Research Division
Headed by David Voss, SIFA’s Policy and Research ensures SIFA has the facts and data to back up our advocacy work and promote our position on issues that affect the Australian shooting industry.
Actively engaged across both federal and jurisdictional firearms policy, David ensures that SIFA is aware of any proposed legislative or regulatory changes that will affect the industry and is equipped to respond to these.

If you have any thoughts on a topic that needs to be researched or an area of policy that you have concerns about, get in contact with David at david.voss@sifa.net.au.
__________

As always, if you are having a specific issue, SIFA is happy to assist. We can also represent these in our discussions with government and the various regulators, so please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Until next time…
